Associate Director of Research

Reporting to the Director of Research and Prospect Management, the Associate Director of Research and Prospect Management contributes to the maintenance and improvement of the research and prospect management program by employing fundraising knowledge, independent judgment, strategic thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity, combined with research and analytical techniques, to support the efficient movement of prospects through the development engagement cycle. Providing a comprehensive range of prospect research, analysis, and datamining to successfully facilitate the flow of prospects into and through the major donor pipeline, the associate director will work with the director and staff to fully utilize the resources of the department to provide maximum support to gift officers and senior staff.

Principal Duties:

  • Actively support the identification and verification of new prospects.
  • Provides support for the fundraising activities of George Mason University by playing a lead role in the identification and qualification of major donor prospects.
  • Plans, conducts and oversees detailed research for university fundraisers and Advancement leadership.
  • Lead data analysis efforts and proactively plan for identifying new and emerging prospects specific to the University’s current and future fundraising goals and priorities.
  • Collaborate with Advancement Operations and Information Technology teams to streamline database and reporting processes, procedures, and best practices.
  • Provide staff training on the newest and most effective tools and resources as needed.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities as relevant, to maintain and enhance skills and abilities and stay abreast of current trends and research techniques.
  • Provide general support to advancement staff and work on special projects as needed.
  • Manage sensitive information and adhere to the Donor Bill of Rights and the Association of Prospect Research for Advancement (APRA) Statement of Ethics, Privacy and Prospect Research.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations or any related field that emphasizes excellent writing, communications and analytical skills; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant work experience;
  • A minimum of five years of development research experience; experience in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of fundraising and proven experience producing profiles, analysis, and reporting to drive fundraising strategies.
  • Working knowledge of current trends in prospect research.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and synthesize data from a wide variety of sources, including knowledge of online research resources, and compile this information into clear and concise profiles.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to be timely, thorough, accurate, and detail-oriented, while managing and prioritizing multiple projects.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with a broad-range of expertise and seniority.
  • Exceptional computer skills that include Microsoft Office Suite and various proprietary prospect identification and relational databases.
  • Strong collaboration and inquiry skills with a commitment to a team-based work environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or demonstrated interest in leading or developing statistical analysis for data analytics and/or predictive modeling.
  • Familiarity with Ellucian Advance and SAP BI software.
  • Knowledge of screening strategies including but not limited to wealth screening, peer screening, in-house database mining, and engagement/affinity and model scoring.
