Recreation Camp Counselor

George Mason University Mason Recreation, within the Division of University Life, is seeking Recreation Camp Counselors. This position will have the opportunity to gain a variety of experiences through working with Mason Recreation and the Mason community. The camp calendar will run Monday through Thursday, June 14-Friday, August 3 (no camp July 4). Shifts will take place between 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Interviewing will occur during the spring semester. Additional training time will be required during late May and early June (described below); dates to be determined.

During the hiring and training process, the potential for advancement to Lead Counselor Lead Counselor ($13 per hour) may arise.


  • Supervise assigned group of campers between the ages of 6-12;
  • Direct daily functions for summer camp dedicated to creating engaging recreational opportunities for children;
  • Instruct and actively participate in all camp activities with campers including daily swim time;
  • Ensure safety of camp attendees;
  • Respond to and document all accidents and emergencies;
  • Ensure safe transportation of campers within the facility, outdoors, and other on-campus areas;
  • Assist with drop-off and sign-in of campers;
  • Organize and lead both small and large group activities;
  • Identify and respond to campers’ behavioral issues, and report concerns to camp leadership;
  • Maintain a clean and organized environment in all camp activity and storage areas;
  • Assist in evaluation and assessment of the program;
  • Maintain respectable working relationships with all camp staff for the duration of employment;
  • Attend scheduled meeting and training sessions;
  • Represent Mason Recreation’s mission and vision;
  • Plan and assess games/crafts geared towards the weekly themes needs using best practices and emerging trend;
  • Communicate with parents/guardians of participants as needed;
  • Assist Camp Director and Camp Coordinators in program needs; and
  • Other duties as assigned by camp leadership or Camp Directors.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older;
  • Strong communication skills with children, parents, peers, and community;
  • Demonstrated experience in working with children and/or recreation activities;
  • Education classes or experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field;
  • Excellent organization, time management, and planning skills;
  • Willingness to adapt and work in high-energy environment;
  • Requires walking or standing frequently; occasional sitting for long periods of time; occasional lifting of objects up to 20 lbs; and frequent lifting or carrying of objects up to 10 lbs;
  • All persons selected for employment must pass a background investigation and potential medical screening (Tuberculosis / TB); and
  • Where all candidates are equally qualified, George Mason University students will be given priority in consideration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in recreation, teaching, early childhood education, or another closely related field; and
  • Demonstrated experience in working with children and/or recreation activities (one year elementary education, or child development courses can be substituted).
