Term Assistant Professor of Biology, STEM Accelerator Program

The George Mason University, Department of Biology and STEM Accelerator in the College of Science invites energetic and enthusiastic individuals with a dedication to improving undergraduate STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to apply for our joint-appointment Term Assistant Professor position. This is a renewable 12-month Term Instructional Faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank with a joint appointment in the Department of Biology and the College of Science STEM Accelerator Program. In addition to an academic appointment in the Department of Biology, the successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary unit that consists of full-time faculty from Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, Forensic Science, Geology, and Chemistry in the COS STEM Accelerator.

During the academic year, the incumbent will teach within the Biology Department, consisting of a combination of lectures, laboratory instruction, recitation, and possibly laboratory coordination. The incumbent will also work on STEM Accelerator programs and help to develop, implement, and run new and innovative programs. Academic year STEM duties include mentoring undergraduate Learning Assistants (LAs) as well as coordinating all Biology LAs and the faculty who are working with them. The COS STEM Accelerator portion of this position will not exceed a half-time assignment during the academic year.

During the summer months, this position is wholly dedicated to the COS STEM Accelerator Program. Summer STEM activities include, but are not limited to, boot camps for majors, and STEM summer camps.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have successfully completed a Ph.D. in biology or a closely related field as well as some teaching experience at the college/university level. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to design and instruct ecology/evolution or biodiversity lecture and laboratory courses at the undergraduate level.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in biology with a concentration in ecology or evolution. Applicants willing to conduct research involving undergraduates are encouraged to apply, but conducting research is not a requirement of the position.

The Department of Biology is comprised of more than 20 faculty focused on both undergraduate and graduate education, 56 Graduate Assistants, and adjunct faculty, all in support of over 1300 undergraduate majors. Faculty from the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, the School of Systems Biology, and the STEM Accelerator Program also contribute to the Biology Department through courses and research collaborations.

The College of Science STEM Accelerator is dedicated to developing programs that: increase the number of STEM majors; improve retention rates of STEM students; reduce the time to graduation; and help STEM graduates join the workforce or continue their education.
