Department of Social Work – Chair and Professor

The College of Health and Human Services at George Mason University (Mason) seeks an energetic and visionary leader to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Social Work. Mason, a Carnegie Research I institution, is the largest and most diverse public university in Virginia with more than 36,000 students from all 50 states and over 135 countries. This position will be filled by a tenured professor with a 12-month appointment. The option exists for an endowed professorship (Elizabeth Enochs Endowed Chair) if the successful candidate has expertise in the welfare of Latin American children.


The chair will provide visionary leadership for the department’s academic, research, practice, and service mission, while managing fiscal resources. The chair is also responsible for faculty recruitment, promoting mentor-ship of early and mid-career faculty, facilitating professional development of all faculty and staff, strengthening the undergraduate and graduate academic enterprise, and promoting the department to various constituent groups in keeping with the College and University’s strategic initiatives. The chair is expected to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills serving as a strong advocate for the department, while nurturing a culture of consensus and collaboration with a focus on transparent decision making.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have an M.S.W. degree from a C.S.W.E. accredited program and a doctorate in Social Work or closely related discipline; significant post-MSW practice experience; thorough knowledge and understanding of CSWE accreditation; demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and mentoring student research; demonstrated academic leadership in a university setting; and a record of refereed publications in high impact journals and extramurally-funded research to merit tenure as a full professor.

The Department of Social Work offers an accredited B.S.W. and M.S.W. with specializations in Social Change and in Clinical Practice, a unique dual M.S.W./M.S. in Conflict Resolution, and a graduate certificate in Gerontology, enrolling 195 undergraduate and 215 graduate students. The department includes 17 full-time faculty with diverse academic and professional backgrounds and various research interests.
