Director of Research Computing

The Office of the Provost is seeking a Director to lead the Office of Research Computing. The Office of Research Computing supports the research cyberinfrastructure needs of the university’s research and education community. The office provides support for cutting-edge research cyberinfrastructure and activities, serving as the primary point of contact for faculty and students planning to use advanced cyberinfrastructure to realize their research and education goals.

The Director will be responsible for leading the Office of Research Computing, whose mission is to support the deployment and use of advanced cyberinfrastructure to advance Mason’s research and related education mission. The Director will report to the Vice President for Research with a dotted line to the Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Information Technology Services.

The Director is responsible for all functions of the Office of Research Computing including:

  • Strategic planning around advanced cyberinfrastucture;
  • Evaluating, deploying, and supporting a comprehensive suite of hardware and software tools and technologies for scientific computing, advanced networking and data storage in support of the strategic plan;
  • Promoting the effective use of advanced cyberinfrastructure through training, education, consultation and documentation;
  • Partnering with colleagues within Mason and in other national and state-level organizations to create and implement Mason’s research cyberinfrastructure strategy;
  • Working with faculty and other researchers (Principal Investigators) in the development of proposals to external and internal sponsors;
  • Working with the Office of Research Integrity and Assurance and ITS Security to translate and ensure adherence with compliance regulations; and
  • Managing research computing development and operational budgets.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in computational science or engineering or related field;
  • Experience planning and supporting an advanced research cyberinfrastructure;
  • Experience advocating for and supporting training for faculty and students using advanced cyberinfratructure;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to manage junior colleagues and influence senior colleagues;
  • Skilled in working co-operatively across administrative and academic units; and
  • Administrative and budget management experience.
