Program Assistant, The EDGE Summer Camps

The George Mason University, Mason Recreation, Center for Outdoor Experiential Learning (The EDGE), located at the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center on the Science and Technology Campus, is seeking applicants for the position of Program Assistant for The EDGE Summer Camps.

The EDGE Summer Camp Program Assistant works with the Assistant Director to plan, develop, and coordinate all EDGE summer camp programs run in partnership with the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center. This is a supervisory coordinator position and the person in this role has responsibility over camps and camp staff.


  • Supervise and support EDGE program camp staff on a daily basis.
  • Create and deliver policies and programming, plan schedules, coordinate trip locations and logistics, ensure proper waivers and permits are completed, write and revise newsletters, and provide materials for programs as needed.
  • Co-lead camp training for staff to prepare them for summer, with the support of the Assistant Director.
  • Plan and implement the Leading EDGE camp service project.

Summer Camp Descriptions: The EDGE operates five summer camps in partnership with the Freedom Center: Leading EDGE, Nature Camp, Jr. Nature Camp, Rock Climbing, and Natural Adventures.

  • Leading EDGE takes campers through the entire challenge course and engages them in a service project. Previous projects have included building birdhouses, planting trees, creating care packages for military overseas, managing invasive species on site, and building rain barrels.
  • Nature Camp is a full day program that engages younger campers with the natural environment of the GMU Science and Technology Campus’s Piedmont Trail and wetland areas.
  • Jr. Nature Camp is a half day program that modifies its program to suit younger campers ages 6–9, focusing on exploring and learning about wildlife on the campus woodland and wetland areas.
  • Rock Climbing Camp challenges campers with rock climbing at Great Falls Park.
  • Natural Adventures takes campers on fun outdoor recreation trips throughout the week, including the challenge course, canoeing, rock climbing, and hiking.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid or ability to obtain these certifications 30 days after hire.
  • One or more years of experience working in summer camps.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience leading camps for youth and/or teens.
  • Background in outdoor recreation, education, or similar field.
  • Familiarity with adventure camp programming.

Summer camp position dates: This position starts regular hours June 4, two weeks before camps open, and concludes August 29. Some training dates may occur during or before the week of May 13.

This position is subject to a criminal background investigation. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of this process.
