Program Assistant for Staff Development – The EDGE

The George Mason University, Mason Recreation, Center for Outdoor Experiential Learning (The EDGE), located at the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center on the Science and Technology Campus, is seeking applicants for the position of Program Assistant for Staff Development.

The Program Assistant for Staff Development assists the EDGE Assistant Director with staff hiring, training, development, and risk management.


  • Assist Assistant Director with the development, planning, delivery, and evaluation of seasonal staff training sessions, local and standard operating procedures, and other staff qualifications.
  • Assist with the development of new staff, including facilitator-in-training packets, observations, and co-facilitations.
  • Assist with the continued development of staff, including in-services and other development opportunities.
  • Assist with editing and writing of manuals, as needed.
  • Assist in the recruitment and hiring of new staff.
  • Coordinate staff apparel and other key items for onboarding new staff.
  • Coordinate first aid supplies.
  • Monitor and record staff qualifications, including 1st aid, CPR, other required trainings, and ACCT or other industry certifications.
  • Serve as lead program staff in the absence of the Assistant Director or Associate Director.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid or more advanced certifications or ability to obtain these certifications 30 days after hire.
  • One or more years of experience working at a challenge course or similar program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant demonstrated experience leading and developing challenge course programming.
  • Background in outdoor recreation, education, or similar field.
  • Strong familiarity with challenge course programming in a university setting.

Position timeframe: This position officially starts May 14. It is a year-round, part-time position. As a part-time wages position the job holder cannot exceed 1450 work hours total across all positions at Mason.

This position is subject to a criminal background investigation. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of this process.
