Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Computational Materials Science

The George Mason University, Department of Computational and Data Sciences in the College of Science invites well-qualified candidates to apply for our Postdoctoral research Fellow in Computational Materials Science position. The selected applicant will support research in the area of computational materials science with an emphasis on applied density functional theory (DFT) and large scale simulations. The successful candidate must have expertise in one or more of the following topics to be able to support this research: computation of electronic and optical properties of nanostructures using the multiband effective mass approximation; construction and use of tight-binding Hamiltonians; molecular dynamics simulations; and calculations of superconducting properties such as electron-phonon coupling based on DFT.

Required Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of PhD in computational materials science or computational quantum physics and chemistry before the first day of employment;
  • Knowledge of computation of electronic and optical properties of nanostructures;
  • Knowledge of multiband effective mass approximation;
  • Construction and application of tight-binding Hamiltonians; and
  • Strong computer programming skills as applied to materials science problems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to write research papers in materials science.
  • Experience in using and writing computer codes in different languages including Fortran.

Advertised Salary Rate: Commensurate with education and experience. Anticipated starting salary is in the mid $50,000s.
