Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Costume and Scenic Design

The George Mason University School of Theater, within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, invites applications for the position of a full-time, tenure track, Assistant Professor with demonstrated strengths in Costume Design/Construction and Scenic Design/Technical Direction. This is a nine-month, full-time position in Mason’s undergraduate Theater Program. Excellence in teaching and continued professional creative work is expected for this position.

Mason is located in Fairfax, Virginia, 15 miles outside of Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the Costume Design and Scenic Design curriculum;
  • Teaching three classes per semester, including major courses in the Design and Technical Theater concentration, and other courses based on special skills or interests.
  • The candidate will design or mentor student designers for School of Theater productions, advise in the selection of the production season, and professionally mentor students; and
  • Additional duties include working in collaboration with theater faculty, and service on department, college and university committees.

Required Qualifications:

  • MFA in costume design/scenic design or a related field, with significant experience as a designer in a variety of professional venues;
  • At least three years of university teaching or the professional equivalent;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills;
  • Computer competency in scenic design and related applications;
  • Successful collaborative experience in a multi-disciplinary environment; and
  • Demonstrated mastery of current and emerging costume and set technologies, facility with software and its application to scenic design, advanced hand and computer based drafting skills, and proficiency with design portfolio software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of effective teaching at the undergraduate level;
  • Experience in teaching online or blended courses;
  • Experience teaching theater appreciation and other courses for non-majors; and
  • Professional affiliation with United States Institute of Theater Technology and/or United Scenic Artists.
