Early Childhood Special Education Specialist


General Job Description:

The Kellar Institute for Human Disabilities at George Mason University seeks applicants for a full-time professional faculty position within its Training and Technical Assistance Center (TTAC), with a focus on early childhood/early childhood special education services. TTAC, in support of a grant from the Virginia Department of Education, provides technical assistance and professional development to school and related services personnel in Virginia Superintendent’s Region 4 who work with students with disabilities. Specifically, the TTAC staff work to improve instructional practices of those who work with students with disabilities in an effort to increase the academic success of these students. Particular attention is given to those schools struggling to meet the state standards for making adequate yearly progress on indicators established by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for coordination and content management of web-based early childhood/early childhood special education (EC/ECSE) professional development, resources, and information dissemination, as directed by the VDOE, to support EC/ECSE personnel in improving practices that facilitate higher student performance and academic outcomes for students with disabilities.
  • Responsible for the coordination and implementation of EC/ECSE Institutes, to include working with VDOE leadership and the ECSE TTAC Coordinators in planning and carrying out these events.
  • Responsible for providing literacy support to Preschool through grade 3 teaching teams involved in VDOE initiatives, such as the Multisensory Literacy Institutes, the Co-Teaching for Excellence Demo Sites, VA Tiered Systems of Support (VTSS), as well as TTAC Region 4 school improvement efforts.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree or higher and licensure (or eligibility for licensure) in Early Childhood Special Education, Early Childhood (PreK-3rd grade), Early Literacy and Language Development, or a related field;
  • Knowledge of effective best practices and current issues in Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education; and
  • At least three years in the field, including experience working with a team of professionals to provide professional development related to language and literacy in young children, birth through age 8 years.
  • Extensive and current knowledge of PreK-grade 3 Early Childhood/Early Childhood Special Education research-based inclusive practices, language and literacy development, curriculum-based assessment, specialized instruction, and the ability to collect, analyze and use data to inform decisions;
  • The ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, to individuals and groups; and
  • Expertise with (or a commitment to learn how to use) Microsoft Office Suite tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with web technology, to include content management of web sites, webinars and online training; and
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in collaboration, teaming, and building relationships with teachers and administrators, including district-level school administrators.
