Term Assistant Professor of Marine Conservation and Policy

The George Mason University, Department of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) in the College of Science (COS) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month Term Assistant Professor position in Marine Conservation and Policy, beginning August 2018. We seek applications from candidates with an interdisciplinary background who are able to contribute to studying natural science, social science, policy, and interdisciplinary questions on marine conservation. Specific duties include a 4:4 teaching load undergraduate and graduate courses in Marine Conservation and Policy. We are especially interested in applicants who are able to teach Marine Ecology, Marine Conservation, Marine Policy, Marine Biology and Conservation, Marine Communication, or related courses. The incumbent may also advise undergraduate and graduate students; and collaborate with other members of the department and university in teaching, and research. The successful candidate will perform service and outreach activities to a range of stakeholders including the university, broader academic community, resource managers, government, and non-profit organizations

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of a PhD in marine conservation, marine biology, marine policy, or a closely related field prior to the start of the appointment;
  • Postdoctoral research fellowship experience;
  • The ability to effectively organize and teach courses in marine conservation and policy; and
  • The ability to communicate scientific knowledge to a diverse range of stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with global marine conservation issues;
  • Peer-reviewed publications;
  • Additional experience in environmental science/marine policy.

About us:
The Environmental Science and Policy Department (ESP) offers a B.S. degree in Environmental Science, a B.A. degree in Environmental and Sustainability Studies, an M.S. degree in Environmental Science and Policy, and a Ph.D. program in Environmental Science and Public Policy. The Department also partners with the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation to offer graduate level courses in biodiversity conservation. The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, including the new Potomac Science Center (PSC) in Belmont Bay which houses the Potomac Environmental Research and Education Center (PEREC).
