Scientific Outreach & Education Program Manager

The George Mason University, Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine (CAPMM) in the College of Science invites highly qualified candidates to apply for our Scientific Outreach and Education Program Manager position. Responsibilities:
The CAPMM Scientific Outreach & Education Program Manager is responsible for creating, organizing, generating funding, coordinating and managing all aspects of outreach programs designed to support 1) student interest and retention in Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), 2) interdisciplinary and multi-institution faculty collaborations, 3) local and international student research training in biotechnology, proteomics and molecular medicine, 4) collaborations between the university and outside entities, 5) event marketing and organization for public awareness of science, and marketing of scientific capabilities. These tasks are primarily accomplished through management of the Aspiring Scientists Summer Internship Program (ASSIP) and Galileo Science Café along with local and international laboratory research courses, student research symposiums, and fostering interdisciplinary and multi-institution research collaborations. The incumbent will also manage the marketing efforts of the center.

Required Qualifications:

  • Technical Knowledge and Skills:
    • Extensive experience with laboratory management;
    • Hands-on familiarity with laboratory equipment and methods; and
    • Knowledge of biomedical concepts/methodology and recent advances related to human diseases such as cancer.
  • Program Management Knowledge and Skills:
    • Familiarity with grant writing and funding mechanisms to support managed programs such as foundation, corporate, individual, and granting agencies;
    • Knowledge of administrative and budgetary principles, concepts/methodology for event and meeting planning and organization;
    • Excellent MS Office Suite skills (Word, Excel, Power Point) and proficient use of software to develop marketing materials, create multi-media curriculum, and statistically analyze data;
    • Ability to independently create, coordinate, plan, organize, and complete multiple and complex programs; and
    • The ability to project, track, and manage program budgets.
  • Interpersonal Communication Skills:
    • Proficient public speaking skills with the ability to present complex concepts to a lay audience; and
    • Excellent interpersonal communication and networking skills with a diverse group of stakeholders such as students, faculty/staff, university leadership, private sector, local officials, and community groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of a Master’s degree in science;
  • Knowledge of international visa requirements for visiting scientists;
  • Knowledge of undergraduate and graduate degree program requirements;
  • Website editing and development;
  • Wet lab experience; and
  • Experience training students in scientific methods.

The mission of the Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine (CAPMM) is to: a) create new technologies and make basic science discoveries in the field of disease pathogenesis b) apply these discoveries and technologies to create and implement strategies for disease prevention, early diagnosis and individualized therapy. The primary emphasis of our disease research is cancer, but new technologies developed in the center are being applied to a number of important human diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity, as well as liver, ocular, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases.
