Communications and Graphic Design Graduate Research Assistant

The George Mason University, Research Partnerships group, School of Business and Center for Assurance Research and Engineering (CARE), Volgenau School of Engineering invites applications for a Communications and Graphic Design Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) supporting research grants in both organizations.


The School of Business Research Partnership group supports the development and fostering of research partnerships between the School of Business and government and private sector both in the U.S. and internationally. The Center for Assurance Research and Engineering is a research to practice cybersecurity research center with technical, policy and leadership and governance projects and initiatives. CARE projects include from DARPA, DHS and NSF. CARE has international partnerships in Asia, Europe, Latin America and Africa.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Communications and Graphic Design GRA to provide creative, technical and editorial support to several research grants.

The position requires an understanding of how to best present content in an engaging way and a background in print, web and video. The day-to-day work entails developing and producing print and online materials, as well as assisting with video and editorial tasks.

Successful candidates will carry out the following tasks:

Communications Design

• Creatively design and develop communication materials;
• In consultation with researchers and other relevant staff, establish graphics and web requirements to meet communications objectives for various communications materials (e.g. posters, reports, policy briefs, booklets, brochures, and other material)
• Gather information for articles or features; take photographs and create/edit graphics; and
• Assist in planning for and video production.

Website Design and Maintenance

• Design web-based graphics, such as web banners, infographics, content for education courses; and
• Edit and maintain webpages and related communications.

Qualifications and Experience

• Completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Communication Design, Graphic Design, Communication Sciences or a related field;
• Excellent knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator & InDesign);
• Knowledge and experience with WordPress;
• Knowledge and experience with video and video editing software; and
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Preferred Qualifications

• Good team player with strong communication skills;
• Flexibility and ability to work within given time frames;
• Attention to detail.
