Academic Advisor

The George Mason University, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office is seeking candidates for the position of Academic Advisor.

Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the College’s Director of Advising and Retention, the Academic Advisor will be responsible for providing academic advising to undergraduate students seeking degrees in Sociology, Anthropology, Religious Studies, or Philosophy, and administering programming that can help create community for faculty and students within the departments.

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and understanding of academic advising/support for undergraduate students;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with students and faculty.
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience advising students in a university setting;
  • Experience working in a higher education environment with diverse student populations; and
  • Experience with computer data entry, Microsoft office suite software, and student database/system software such as SSC-Campus.

Preferred qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in higher education/student affairs, sociology, anthropology, religious studies, philosophy or related field;
  • Teaching experience; and
  • Experience with Assessment of advising or special programs.
