Financial Administrator
Volgenau School of Engineering


The George Mason University Volgenau School of Engineering seeks to hire a Financial Administrator to provide fiscal assistance and information to faculty researchers with their sponsored research grants and contracts. This position will provide budget and financial information on sponsored research to faculty researchers; as well as provide information on proper budget and expenditure procedures. Responsibilities:

  • Collect and audit monthly reconciliation reports; distribute via email and follow-up with faculty to resolve any reconciliation issues;
  • Monitor and verify payroll and non-payroll expenditures, tuition charges, and other budget transactions on the grants and contracts;
  • Process internal and external personnel, tuition charges, and other direct charges on sponsored research grants and contracts;
  • Assist with the origination of GRA and Wage employee contracts;
  • Assist faculty with special spending issues such as equipment, conferences and participant payments;
  • Review and confirm the grant allows for the purchasing of equipment; as well as the reimbursement for select expenditures;
  • Provide financial data and create budget reports to assist faculty as needed;
  • Attend regular OSP Roundtable Meetings and any other University- wide meetings pertaining to Research Administration; and
  • Other financial and administrative duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in research administration at a major university or non-profit organization;
  • Organization skills, with keen attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Experience working with a diverse population which includes students and a constituent of faculty at all levels;
  • The ability to solve problems and issues related to sponsored research;
  • The ability to multi-task and work independently, as well as with a team;
  • The flexibility to change and reprioritize workload to meet the needs of the office; and
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite applications, particularly Excel and Word.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors’ degree (Concentration in Accounting, Business, or related discipline);
  • Incumbent must have knowledge and working understanding of rules and regulations governing allowable expenditures on sponsored research; and
  • The ability to solve problems and issues related to sponsored research.
