Admissions Counselor

The George Mason University College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) is seeking an experienced student recruitment professional with a strong service orientation and relationship management skills to strengthen the services provided to prospective students by the CEHD Office of Admissions. The Admissions Counselor will be responsible for collaboratively planning and executing recruitment outreach and other forms of engagement within several core audiences critical to the College’s strategic enrollment objectives: (1) current George Mason University undergraduate students (roughly 24,000) who are good candidates for bachelor’s/accelerated master’s (BAM) and other academic programs at the College, including several new undergraduate teacher education programs that are currently in development; (2) alumni of CEHD degree programs who, in addition to being prospective students, provide access to networks of prospective students; and (3) prospective students from underrepresented minority groups.

Success in this role will require a professional who possesses the abilities and skill necessary to be successful in recruiting students, in addition to building relationships across the College and University community that will be necessary to execute and/or enhance the success of recruitment efforts.


  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Chief Marketing and Recruitment Officer, develop and execute campaigns to generate awareness and interest in BAM and other CEHD academic programs through outreach and programming directly to Mason undergraduate students, undergraduate advisors across the University, and/or faculty and other staff within targeted undergraduate “feeder” programs (i.e., “inreach”);
  • Manage the CEHD Patriot Alumni Recruitment Program (PART), including the coordination and execution of direct marketing and other outreach to promote participation/opt-in; coordination of the communications plan for those who have opted in, including the distribution of any marketing collateral; coordinating and supporting participants in executing onsite and/or virtual information sessions; and conducting ongoing assessment and implementing program improvements and enhancements as results are collected and analyzed;
  • Develop and implement a process utilizing the university Customer Relationship Management system (CRM) to track the results of “inreach” and alumni recruitment outreach;
  • Support the CEHD Office of Admissions in recruitment outreach and programming, as needed, including participation in the fall and spring open houses and other large scale recruitment events, graduate recruitment travel throughout the region and Commonwealth in the fall and spring, and presentations to high school students enrolled in “feeder” courses in the region;
  • Participate in proactive phone outreach and/or in person consultation with prospective students, especially at peak times in the recruitment cycle; and
  • Achieve new enrollment goals by accepting ownership for the above tasks and exploring new opportunities as they arise.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Demonstrated experience in student recruitment or related field (internship and/or student work experience will be considered); and
  • Must be able to travel independently within Virginia.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Previous experience in strategic recruitment planning;
  • Event planning experience;
  • Social media and marketing experience; and
  • Experience working in K-12 education, or fields such as Recreation, Allied Health, Tourism and Events Management.
