ESL Specialist Tutor

The Mason Writing Center invites graduate students with backgrounds in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, and/or tutoring English as a second language to apply for the position of ESL Specialist Tutor. ESL Specialist tutors will join a vibrant community of 30+ undergraduate and graduate tutors and will obtain valuable professional development that allows them to refine their own communication and academic writing skills. They will provide personalized one-on-one consultations for multilingual graduate and undergraduate writers from all of Mason’s colleges and schools. They work with these writers at any stage of the writing process, offering feedback, sharing strategies, and helping writers make a plan for developing or revising their work.

ESL specialist tutors will begin work on January 18, 2018. The position entails 25 hours of paid training distributed across the first four weeks of the semester, after which tutors will work 10-15 hours per week for the remainder of the spring and for all subsequent semesters.

ESL specialist tutors conduct 45-minute face-to-face writing consultations. They will often meet regularly with writers in the center’s ESL Opt-In Program, which offers multilingual writers weekly or twice-weekly appointments with the same tutor(s). They may also deliver workshops, assist our full-time ESL Specialist in developing materials for multilingual writers, contribute to writing center projects, and perform light administrative work between tutoring appointments.

Required Qualifications:
Either experience teaching or tutoring second-language learners or multilingual writers OR background in Applied Linguistics or TESOL; evidence of strong academic writing skills and performance; sensitivity to cultural differences; well-developed communication skills; friendly and professional demeanor.

Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced proficiency in a language other than English; experience living or working abroad; familiarity with writing conventions of multiple disciplines; familiarity with writing center pedagogy. Non-native speakers of English encouraged to apply.
