Graduate Programs, Administrative Support Specialist

The George Mason University, Department of Criminology, Law and Society (CLS) within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences invites applications for an Administrative Support Specialist position. We are seeking a well-organized, self-motivated, and energetic administrative professional to help manage and support our growing graduate programs.

Primary Responsibilities include:

  • Handle the daily administrative tasks necessary to support all potential and current CLS graduate students and faculty including:
    • Assist students with course registration
    • Prepare paperwork to advance students through their programs
    • Conduct graduation audits
    • Manage budgets and purchases associated with graduate programs
  • Support the Graduate Admissions Committee and work with all applicants to the CLS MA, MS and PhD programs including:
    • Manage applicant files for review by the committee
    • Work with committee chair to manage communications with applicants
    • Act as primary contact for all applicant inquires
  • Provide support to the Graduate Recruiting Committee and work with and counsel all incoming students interested in the CLS graduate programs including:
    • Respond to all inquiries about the program and arranging campus visits
    • Work with College and Mason Graduate Admissions to promote the CLS graduate program
    • Plan and attend department promotional events
  • Provide administrative support to the Graduate Awards Committee: Publicize, organize and review graduate student travel award applications and work with students to arrange travel.
  • Assist with CLS department administrative support and assist Office Manager with department travel, grading coordination, events management, website and ListServe maintenance and purchasing as needed.

Required Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience handling a wide range of administrative duties
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and work effectively independently and with a team
  • Proficiency with technology including advanced word processing, databases, spreadsheets and web-based applications
  • Proven customer service and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work within strict guidelines and meet multiple deadlines
  • Previous experience planning and implementing events
  • Previous experience managing budgets
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Education and Skills:

  • Master’s degree
  • Familiarity with admissions, graduate programs, and policies within a university setting
  • Experience with the Ellucian Banner system, Patriot Web, MicroStrategy, 25Live, and eVA or similar reporting systems and databases
  • Experience working with college students or in higher education.
