Budget Analyst

The George Mason University Office of Budget and Planning invites applications for a Budget Analyst. The mission of the Office of Budget and Planning is to promote the sound deployment and management of Mason’s financial resources. We fulfill our mission via budgeting, which translates the mission and goals of George Mason University into systematic operating plans expressed in dollars. Our work includes planning revenues and expenses for all institutional operations; fiscal analysis of university activities; support for unit-level budget development and analysis; maintaining budget data in critical administrative systems; and future financial planning for existing and prospective programs.


This position will provide budgetary support to the Director of Financial Analysis and Budget Operations and team and is a hands-on position requiring critical thinking, strong analytical skills, superior organization, confidentiality, and the ability to follow University and State policies for ensuring budgets are allocated accurately and timely.

Reporting to the Director of Financial Analysis and Budget Operations, the successful candidate will:

  • Create, cancel, and maintain position budgets;
  • Process job labor changes;
  • Complete personnel funding reallocations;
  • Adjust personnel future funding;
  • Review and reconcile all position control related transactions;
  • Prepare and distribute unit position budget activity logs;
  • Complete budget adjustments;
  • Ensure budgets are aligned with approved allocations;
  • Track all positions and accompanying budgets;
  • Ensure files are organized and orderly for easy review;
  • Work with complex University information systems, and serve as an end user for systems such as Banner and MicroStrategy;
  • Communicate with a variety of personnel throughout the university;
  • Assist in the development of the operations budget;
  • Serve as liaison for the Office of Budget and Planning to staff regarding all personnel and position budgetary information; and
  • Create financial and human resources reports to track personnel and position budgets.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills (written and oral);
  • Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Superior interpersonal and organizational skills, flexible and detail-oriented;
  • Advanced PC skills, including e-mail, data entry and work processing;
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of data;
  • Knowledge of budget, financial and general business practices; and
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Intermediate/advanced experience working with Microsoft Excel and Access;
  • Experience working with Ellucian Banner; and
  • Experience in a university administrative setting a plus.
