Graduate Professional Assistant

Internal Search: Open to current George Mason University graduate students only.

The Office of the Provost invites current George Mason University graduate student applicants only for an internal search for a Graduate Professional Assistant (GPA) to work with the Director of Fellowships in the Honors College and the Director of Graduate Fellowships in the Office of the Provost. The GPA must have strong communication skills, attention to detail, a commitment to student learning, and moderate experience with basic web-based communication tools (WordPress, Blackboard, social media). Advanced technological skills are not necessary. Over the course of this assistantship, the GPA will gain an understanding of fellowship advising, which is an academic career path open to a wide range of academic backgrounds and a valuable skill set in any academic career. The GPA will gain experience communicating with students about funding opportunities and organizing workshops and information sessions to educate students on funding opportunities. He/She will learn to read application materials and vet candidates for eligibility and basic qualifications/fit. The GPA will also gain a range of professional soft skills like time management, effective outreach, student advising approaches, and prioritization.

Responsibilities:

The GPA will gain valuable experience in grant and fellowship advising, an essential skill for future faculty and an academic career path in its own right.
General duties include:

  • Serve as campus resource for undergraduate and graduate students interested in fellowship opportunities by disseminating materials about scholarship, fellowship and grant opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Serving as initial advising contact for undergraduate student fellowships inquiries;
  • Manage and implement logistical plans for presentations and workshops for applicants to grant and fellowship programs;
  • Updating and maintaining web sites for campus fellowships offices;
  • Managing communication via social media platforms such as Blackboard, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube;
  • Assisting with the vetting and review of grant, fellowship and scholarship application materials;
  • Designing and authoring/revising content for fellowships advising materials;
  • Serve as a representative of the fellowships offices at campus events; and
  • Special projects as required.

At the end of this assistantship, the student will:

  • Know how to gather, organize, author, and present advising and promotional materials on fellowship and funding opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Be able to conduct advising sessions with students to determine basic eligibility and assess qualifications for competitive funding opportunities.
  • Be able to manage online communications and networking tools for informing and advising students about funding opportunities.
  • Know how to conduct information sessions and workshops for prospective applicants to regionally and nationally competitive funding opportunities.
  • Gain insight into the world of nationally competitive fellowship and scholarship opportunities, and into grant writing skills for graduate students.
  • Develop relationships with program officers at funding agencies.

The student will gain experience with professional communications, including electronic communications and networking, and webinars. Additionally, the student will become familiar with a wide variety of funding opportunities for students, and advise students on requirements and procedures for prospective applicants.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be registered as full-time graduate students in good standing at George Mason University (Ph.D. students are preferred);
  • Per the university’s Graduate Assistant Handbook, graduate assistants at George Mason University may not hold other jobs or internships, whether on or off campus;
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office;
  • Experience communicating via social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and webinars/telepresence. Also, the ability to post and make basic updates to web sites using WordPress;
  • Superior oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong attention to detail; and
  • Willingness to learn and work with a variety of electronic tools and systems.

Eligibility requirements, as outlined in the George Mason University, Office of the Provost publication, “Graduate Student Hiring and Support Guidelines.” George Mason University Graduate Professional Assistants (GPAs) must be:

  • Students must be admitted to a graduate degree program at George Mason University;
  • Students must have full-time enrollment during the semesters they are GPAs (whether their GPA is full-time or part-time). Monitoring the GPA’s enrollment will be conducted by the hiring department. Exceptions to the six-hour enrollment required are considered only for students who need fewer than six hours to complete their degree and graduate. If the student falls into this category, the student’s graduate coordinator must forward a written request to carry a reduced load to the Dean’s Office by the latest schedule adjustment date. This request should include the student’s status in his or her program and the number of remaining hours and specific courses that remain. If all dissertation or thesis hours have been expended, the student must still register for one credit of dissertation or thesis work per semester. F-1 and J-1 international students also need the approval of the Office of International Programs and Services before dropping below full-time (as defined in the University Catalog);
  • Students must be in good academic standing, have a minimum 3.0 grade point average, and may not have any recent (as defined by the Dean’s Office) unsatisfactory grades at the time the offer letter is created;
  • Students must meet George Mason University’s English proficiency requirements. Individual programs reserve the right to set higher minimum scores. Please visit the Admissions section of the current University Catalog; and
  • Students must submit the necessary hiring paperwork; for details, see Section II, Hiring Paperwork, of the Graduate Student Hiring and Support Guidelines publication.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with grant, fellowship or scholarship application processes;
  • Experience with academic research at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels; and
  • Commitment to student learning.
