Educational Support Specialist – Department of Mechanical Engineering

The George Mason University Department of Mechanical Engineering, within the Volgenau School of Engineering, is seeking a part-time hourly non-student wage Educational Support Specialist (part-time, maximum authorized hours of work is 29 hours per week). The person in this position will provide both administrative and academic support for the Department Chair, its faculty, and undergraduate students located on the Science and Technology Campus. Responsibilities:

  • Provides information and assistance on degree requirements; completion of required forms; deadline dates; etc. to undergraduate students;
  • Provides assistance with open house events for students, departmental meetings, and events;
  • Provides administrative support to faculty to include assisting with the process of travel and reimbursement forms;
  • Purchases office supplies, and tracks processing of invoices; and
  • Secures and books meeting space reservations for events; creation, processing, and tracking of event invoicing.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate in this position will be the first line of contact to the public for the program, and thus must exude a customer service attitude that projects a competent and friendly image. Additional qualifications include:

  • Prior work experience aligned with the administrative and fiscal responsibilities of a support position in a university setting;
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
  • Self-motivated, results-driven individual who has the ability to work independently;
  • Ability to manage and complete projects and requests from multiple people by required deadlines;
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of faculty and students; and
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, and ability to navigate the internet.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Flexibility in responding to new projects and assignments as they arise; and
  • Familiarity with university systems (i.e., Ellucian Banner, catering, Events Production, 25live, Parking Services); and
  • Because of position responsibilities, non-students are highly preferred.

Working Hours:

  • 29 hours per week Monday through Friday; and
  • Hours may include occasional work in the evenings to participate in department events.
