Part-Time Administrative Assistant – Computer Science Department

The George Mason University Department of Computer Science, within the Volgenau School of Engineering, is seeking a qualified Part-Time Administrative Assistant for an hourly paid position. In addition to general administrative duties, responsibilities for this versatile support position include:

  • Greets and directs visitors; responds to general phone, e-mail and in-person questions of prospective and admitted students and their families; and directs and distributes inquiries to appropriate faculty and staff;
  • Coordination of Department-sponsored events: organizing and managing all event details, to include but not limited to location, decor, catering, entertainment, transportation, invitee list, equipment, promotional material, audio-visual production, and script writing;
  • Process hiring paperwork for undergraduate wage employees;
  • Updating of department website and reservation calendar; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Prior work experience aligned with the administrative and fiscal responsibilities of a support position in a university setting;
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and function effectively in working teams;
  • Ability to manage and complete projects and requests from multiple people in a timely manner; and
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of faculty and students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Flexibility in responding to new projects and assignments as they arise;
  • Familiarity with university systems (i.e., Ellucian Banner, catering, Events Production, 25live, Parking Services);
  • Excellent computer skills with working knowledge of all applications in Microsoft Office, database expertise, and e-mail and network applications; and
  • Because of position responsibilities, non-students are highly preferred.

Working Hours:

  • 29 hours per week Monday through Friday; and
  • Hours may include occasional work in the evenings to participate in department events.


  • $15.00-18.00 per hour, commensurate with qualifications.
