Director of Administrative Operations – National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases

The George Mason University National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases (NCBID), within the College of Science, invites highly-qualified candidates to apply for our Director of Administrative Operations position. National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases faculty are leaders in the areas of biotechnology, biodefense and the life sciences. They focus on developing broad spectrum drugs against bioterrorism and newly emerging or reemerging infectious diseases. The work is supported by students and scientific staff in laboratories housed on the Science and Technology campus in Manassas, Va. The NCBID oversees and operates the Biomedical Research Laboratory (BRL), which contains BSL-2 and 3 laboratories for the development of techniques and products for detection, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases that result from biological terrorism or arise naturally.

Responsibilities:

As the director of the day-to-day administrative operations of the NCBID and the Biomedical Research Laboratory (BRL) on the Science and Technology campus, this position oversees the administrative activities and resources of the center, including the 52,000 square foot Biomedical Research Laboratory (BRL) facility, to ensure seamless operations and provide a thriving research environment. In this capacity, the incumbent:

  • Supervises the fiscal, HR, and purchasing administrative functional areas and personnel;
  • Serves as the primary point of contact on administrative issues for the NCBID with Mason units outside of the College of Science;
  • Develops, implements, maintains, and oversees the internal operating policies, procedures and protocols of the center;
  • Ensures that the researchers, faculty and staff remain in compliance with all training requirements;
  • Monitors the compliance requirements of the research performed by the Principle Investigators;
  • Assists in the development of the operations budget and rate development; and
  • Supports business development, marketing the BRL’s capabilities, and supports Principle Investigators to obtain grants and contracts through sponsored projects.

Required Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree at the master’s level, or training and work experience at a director level that equates to an advanced degree, preferably in business or the life sciences with significant knowledge/experience in the other field;
  • Prior experience working in a major research center;
  • Knowledge of fiscal and budgetary processes and general accounting principles;
  • Demonstrated management experience in an administrative setting; and
  • MUST have the ability to pass a Department Of Justice Security Risk Assessment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of sponsored project management best practices and knowledge of the OMB circulars;
  • Experience with budget planning and monitoring expenditures;
  • Experience in biological research lab management; and
  • Experience working in a large public institution.
