Assistant Director, Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC)

The George Mason University Community Business Partnership (CBP) invites applications for an Assistant Director, Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC). The Community Business Partnership is an independent not-for-profit organization that is part of George Mason University’s Mason Enterprise Center under the Office of Research and Economic Development. CBP’s mission is to be a complete resource center providing training and support to those seeking to build successful small businesses. CBP delivers entrepreneurial skills training to over 4,000 clients per year and also provides specialized support services, including one-on-one counseling services, networking events, three small business conferences annually, extensive referral network, small business incubator services, and access to capital.

Responsibilities:

The VBOC Assistant Director reports directly to the VBOC Director and provides training, counseling and outreach services to a diverse military community client base (including Veterans, active duty, National Guard, Reservists and spouses); and applies sound business management principles, practices, and techniques to the organization. This position will provide assistance for new business startups or business expansions in the Metropolitan Washington, D.C., service region, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands; as well as oversee professional training class delivery, to include the Boots to Business and Boots to Business—Reboot programs. The incumbent will represent the CBP VBOC at regional professional events and associations, and work with the other directors and management of the CBP to raise additional funding as required to expand services and offerings to small business owner.

This is a grant-funded position contingent upon continued availability of grant funds. The VBOC at the Community Business Partnership is a partnership program of the U.S. Small Business Administration, George Mason University, Mason Enterprise Center in the Office of Research and Economic Development.

Duties:

  • Deliver or assist in the delivery of the Boots to Business and Boots to Business—Reboot training programs within the service region;
  • Assist in the implementation of a marketing and outreach plan to market the services of the VBOC to clients as well as to stakeholders and other resource partners;
  • Under the direction of the VBOC Director, coordinate with other veterans’ organizations around the region, and explore partnership opportunities as appropriate;
  • Implement programmatic activities to reach VBOC milestones and objectives;
  • Assist in the planning and execution of the annual Veterans in Business Conference;
  • Assist in the management and recruitment of professional volunteers to assist with counseling and training activities;
  • Provide assistance for new business startups or business expansion—this assistance shall consist of (but not be limited to) assisting with business plans, marketing strategies, loan applications, financial analysis, sources of finance, business structures, licenses, and numerous other business issues for start-up and existing businesses;
  • Perform business assessments for small businesses and entrepreneurs to determine strengths and weaknesses; and develop an improvement plan, which may include consulting, training, marketing, funding or a wide variety of business services;
  • Provide guidance to clients to develop comprehensive business plans;
  • Assist in the recruitment sponsors for VBOC events;
  • Develop, plan, implement, and lead adult learning educational programs, as well as outreach assistance programs;
  • Provide counseling assistance to small and medium-sized businesses in areas such as marketing, management, finance, planning, accounting, international management, technological assistance, and government procurement;
  • Market the VBOC program on local, state and regional levels;
  • Network and leverage outside public and private sector resources, and work with the area businesses and the professional community;
  • Assist in the measurement and evaluation of the impact of program delivery and synthesize/analyze information in professional reports as directed;
  • Work in coordination with CBP’s other programs to strengthen and promote the organization as a whole;
  • Attend VBOC monthly conference calls, annual professional development conferences and participate in network-wide initiatives;
  • Maintain professional competency by participating in professional development programs and/or completing annual refresher courses as appropriate; and
  • Perform any ad-hoc duties as may be required to ensure the success of the VBOC and CBP.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in accounting, business administration, management and/or public policy;
  • Extensive background in small business issues; and
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Veteran status.
