Project Manager, Design

The George Mason University Facilities Management Department is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual to serve in a Project Manager, Design position. This position is responsible for managing the planning and design of capital and noncapital projects from project initiation through permitting, ensuring that the project design is conceived and developed in conformance with user’s programmatic requirements and defined project scope, budget, schedule, and quality expectations, as well as the campus master plan and the design guidelines and design standards. Duties include:

  • Supporting the user representative(s) to assist in the definition of the user’s program requirements and project objectives;
  • Working with user representative(s) and other stakeholders to determine the project scope, budget, schedule and quality expectations;
  • Developing or managing the development of a project concept; and
  • Supporting the development of Capital Budget Requests to be submitted in the Performance Budgeting System as applicable.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, interior design, or engineering; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Licensed architect or engineer or certified interior designer or ability to obtain licensure or certification within six (6) months;
  • Significant demonstrated experience may be substituted for licensure or certification;
  • Experience with Virginia Department of General Services and Bureau of Capital Outlay Management;
  • Demonstrated significant project management experience with progressively increasing responsibility; and
  • Demonstrated higher education project experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience managing large and complex projects from conception to execution with total projects costs of $2M or greater;
  • Strong understanding of planning and architectural design principles;
  • Strong understanding of programming;
  • In-depth knowledge of the design and project delivery process;
  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, establish priorities, and adapt to changing priorities and schedules;
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and consultants with diverse expertise and interests;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and forge consensus;
  • Previous experience in higher education projects is highly desired; and
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form, and make presentations to a wide variety of audiences.
