Assistant Director of Alumni Communications

The George Mason University Office of Alumni Relations seeks a detail-oriented, collaborative, and highly motivated individual to serve as Assistant Director of Alumni Communications. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations the Assistant Director is part of a team of staff and volunteer leaders dedicated to developing and strengthening lifelong relationships between alumni and George Mason University. The Assistant Director of Alumni Communications is responsible for developing and managing the integrated alumni communication strategy for Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association.


  • Manages all forms of alumni communications produced by the Office of Alumni Relations inclusive of print, social media, and e-communications as well as content development using iModules (online alumni engagement platform for content management, e-mail marketing, event management, online giving, and directory);
  • Adheres to Advancement goals and objectives by working collaboratively with Annual Giving, Advancement Communications, and the Office of Communications and Marketing as well as unit advancement staff and the Alumni Association;
  • Serves as the webmaster for alumni relations and the Alumni Association, overseeing content development and accuracy;
  • Ensures alumni messaging and branding align with university standards and guidelines;
  • Coordinates e-communications with Alumni Relations staff and unit advancement staff and develops the Scroll (monthly alumni newsletter), segmented and unit based e-newsletters, event promotions and announcements;
  • Manages communications for all alumni programs and services of Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association, working collaboratively with program and event staff;
  • Participates in all Alumni Association programs and events in collaboration with Alumni Relations and unit advancement staff; and
  • Provides leadership and expertise on the e-mail management task force and other communications-related committees.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, mass communications, marketing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated significant experience in e-marketing or e-communications and a proven track record of successfully developing strategy and content for e-communications;
  • Strong writing ability, and experience developing written content for e-communications; and demonstrated success in gathering and using research to develop initiatives that support online content and marketing;
  • Experience in the use of e-communications software and tools (particularly with Web content management systems and e-mail marketing software);
  • Strong strategic, organizational and project leadership skills; and ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively;
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills;
  • An understanding of George Mason University’s identity and mission, and an ability to articulate it clearly;
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of individuals;
  • Knowledge of Web site best practices;
  • Knowledge of HTML, Adobe Creative Suite/and or similar tools, CSS and copy-editing; and
  • Ability to work evenings/weekends as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree;
  • Experience in higher education or nonprofit environment; and
  • Experience with iModules Encompass Enterprise.
