Mason Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Director

The Mason Enterprise Center (MEC) is currently seeking an individual to fill the role of Director of the Mason Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The Mason SBDC provides business advising and training to a diverse clientele made up of existing and prospective small businesses. The Mason SBDC is a program of the Virginia SBDC Network within the Mason Enterprise Center organization. The Virginia SBDC Network is funded in part by the U.S. Small Business Administration and George Mason University. This position reports to the State Director, Virginia SBDC Network.


The SBDC Director will manage and direct the day-to-day operations of the SBDC, provide business advising and training to clients, and represent the Mason SBDC and MEC at local and regional networking and outreach events to promote the SBDC program. Duties include:

  • Develop, implement, measure and refine strategies to best meet the needs of client base;
  • Develop and manage SBDC program proposals and budgets;
  • Recruit, hire and provide direct oversight to staff;
  • Provide advising, mentoring and training for new business start-ups and existing businesses across the full spectrum of business functions with a primary emphasis on financing, marketing, and business planning;
  • Develop and implement promotional strategies and materials that ensure the visibility of the Mason SBDC locally, regionally and within George Mason University;
  • Collaborate with and leverage existing resources within the Mason Enterprise Center and George Mason University to the benefit of SBDC clients;
  • Manage and contribute to the preparation of performance reports for SBDC sponsors; and
  • Provide input and assistance to the State Director, Virginia SBDC Network, and Mason Enterprise Center leadership.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in business administration or a related field; or a combination of education and work experience at a level that equates to the advanced degree;
  • Demonstrated experience in:
    • Providing business advising and training for small businesses;
    • Supervising professional and administrative staff;
    • Organizational promotion and outreach;
    • Public speaking;
    • Budget responsibility;
    • Working with diverse partner groups; and
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; and experience with client relationship management software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Considerable experience in business.
