International Advisor

The George Mason University Office of International Programs and Services invites applicants from an enthusiastic and energetic individual for an International Advisor position within the office. Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for advising on federal regulations and nonimmigrant status in the United States; and assisting nonimmigrants sponsored by, or attending, George Mason University to access resources on or off campus to help them reach their academic, professional and personal goals while affiliated with the university. Regulatory advising, certifications, endorsements, and SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) actions are undertaken with the goal of ensuring that George Mason University is in full compliance with federal regulations governing nonimmigrant students, scholars and faculty under the university’s sponsorship.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, including full-time professional experience directly related to the responsibilities of the position (working with nonimmigrants on a college campus, advising nonimmigrants on regulatory issues, serving as a DSO [Designated School Official] and/or RO [Responsible Officer], or similar responsibilities);
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly in explaining abstract concepts to nonnative speakers of English;
  • Effective cross-cultural and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality in accordance with federal law and university policy;
  • Ability to research and analyze complex federal regulations and apply them to specific cases involving nonimmigrants in a higher education setting;
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, including the ability to balance multiple priorities and adapt to changing demands;
  • Ability to work independently as well as to collaborate successfully in a team setting;
  • Excellent work habits—including timeliness, reliability in meeting deadlines, strong interpersonal communication with colleagues and supervisors, and effective stewardship of time and resources;
  • Ability and willingness to perform job responsibilities outside of normal working hours when required to achieve service goals and performance objectives; and
  • U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residence (required by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services as a condition of endorsing documents for nonimmigrant students and scholars).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in international education, student personnel, area studies, or another field related to the responsibilities of the position;
  • At least one year of experience as an F-1 DSO or J-1 RO or Alternate Responsible Officer;
  • Familiarity with cross-cultural communication and adjustment; and
  • Experience living, studying or traveling abroad.
