Plumber (Mornings)

The George Mason University Facilities Department is currently seeking candidates for the position of Plumber on the Fairfax, Va., campus. The shift for this position will be Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.

Duties:

Under supervision, the successful candidate will:

  • Perform journey-level steam fitting and plumbing maintenance;
  • Troubleshooting, repair, and/or renovation of buildings, facilities, and equipment in one or more of the following areas: underground piping systems, building piping fixtures, and building equipment and controls;
  • Inspect buildings, facilities and equipment to ascertain needed repairs; and
  • Make recommendations and follow up to the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of proper use and maintenance of hand and power tools related to job functions;
  • Knowledge of job codes, rules and regulations;
  • Working knowledge of installation and maintenance as they relate to building codes, rules and regulations; and
  • Working knowledge of the installation, maintenance and repair of water and steam systems and related equipment.

Skills:

  • Journey-level skill in maintenance and repair procedures including maintenance, breakdown repair, and troubleshooting;
  • Construction, installation and fabrication techniques typical in trade;
  • Perform mathematical computation of trade; and
  • Problem-solving skills and sound judgment.

Abilities:

  • Strong demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints and systems diagrams;
  • Ability to observe and practice working habits and maintain security of buildings and systems to effectively work individually or in teams, as well as with diverse groups;
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing;
  • Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment, subject to frequently changing priorities;
  • Ability to follow through and carry out assignments; and
  • Ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures.

A valid driver’s license is required.
