Research Assistant Professor, Multidisciplinary Proteomics/Biochemistry

The George Mason University Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine (CAPMM), within the College of Science, invites well-qualified candidates with demonstrated expertise in proteomics, metabolomics, and biochemistry to apply for a Research Assistant Professor position. This junior faculty position will:

  • Perform research using a unique combination of genomic, metabolomic, and proteomic skill sets for integrating molecular profiling in clinical translational research;
  • Perform research involving LC-tandem mass spectrometry, metabolite identification and quantification, reverse phase protein microarray construction and analysis, laser capture microdissection, immunoblotting/immunoprecipitation, microscopy, 2D and 3D mammalian cell culture, and data analysis;
  • Assay development, small animal dissection, patient diagnostic testing, quality control, quality improvement, teaching, and research and development activities commensurate with a PhD level; and
  • Communicate research progress to colleagues, present research at conferences, and write grant proposals and articles for publication.

The initial appointment for this position will be one year and is eligible for renewal dependent upon satisfactory performance and continuation of funding. Most of the work will be performed at the George Mason University’s Science and Technology campus in Manassas, Va. Some local travel to hospitals/clinics may be required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, biological science, or a related field;
  • Selected candidate is expected to be open to learning new techniques and working in a highly independent and interdisciplinary environment;
  • Demonstrated experience with some combination of ImageJ, JavaScript, R, SPS, and/or RPPA analysis;
  • Experience in metabolite identification and quantification, DNA adduct identification, biochemical pathway analysis, reverse phase protein microarray, ELISA, mammalian cell culture with plasmid design and lentivirus transfection, qRT-PCR, chemical extraction of tissue, and microscopy;
  • Ability to work with small animal models;
  • Ability to apply proteomic, genomic, and metabolomic technologies to monitor molecular markers relevant to patient stratification, treatment efficacy, or toxicity; and
  • Proficiency in the use of personal computer, word-processing applications, automation of data analysis and spreadsheet applications with demonstrated scientific writing ability; and
  • Excellent communication skills in oral and written English.

Considering the interdisciplinary nature of the research group and the projects that the candidate will work on, the position requires an individual who has demonstrated experience across multiple disciplines. Candidates should have an interest in designing clinical research projects for deciphering complex signal transduction and biochemical pathways and mechanisms of inhibition.

Examples of the skills that will be used in this work include: liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, laser capture microdissection, reverse phase protein microarrays, electrophoresis, microscopy, structural biology, DNA sequence analysis, PCR, ELISA, western blotting, animal dissection, and human/animal histology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in signal transduction pathway analysis and nucleic acid purification.
