The College of Science has approximately 400 employees and has the second largest student enrollment at the university. With a wide variety of programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, COS is also the largest research unit in the university—constituting approximately one-third of the total research portfolio, and having generated approximately one-third of the university’s research proposals in FY16. Our mission is to produce science that enhances society; and COS undertakes pioneering research endeavors that are integrated with academic programs to offer insight and solutions to the complex issues that challenge today’s world.

Responsibilities:

We depend on our Grants and Finance team to provide financial management of college-level research centers and programs, review department and center expenditures, review sponsored project proposals, and contribute to the ongoing evolution and management of our financial processes. To this end, this position serves a critical role of mitigating risk and ensuring compliance with university, state and federal laws and regulations; budget availability; and accurate financial reporting and forecasting of data and expenditures related to department/centers, faculty and students within the assigned COS units and programs. Working collaboratively with the Grants and Finance team, the incumbent manages complex financial activities on large sponsored projects within the COS Dean’s Office, and participates in efforts to improve finance-related processes. The incumbent guides Principal Investigators as well as departmental staff to ensure compliance on expenditure and revenue activities (Sponsored Projects funds, Indirect accounts, E and G and Foundation accounts) for the assigned COS units. Additionally, the incumbent manages complex financial activities, including but not limited to: planning, forecasting, budgeting, accounting, reconciling, and reporting for college-level research centers and education programs

Required Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with sponsored project management, Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Uniform Guidance, and related best practices;
  • Knowledge of fiscal and budgetary processes and general accounting principles;
  • Strong collaboration and team-building skills to facilitate relationships for the college with internal and external customers;
  • Prior experience working with relational databases; and
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially intermediate Excel skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience in handling confidential data (highly preferred);
  • Familiarity with federal grant processes;
  • Experience with budget planning and monitoring expenditures;
  • Experience with a large public institution;
  • Ability to research, investigate, analyze, reconcile, and evaluate data;
  • Ability to calculate labor effort proportionally per project;
  • Ability to work independently with strong organizational, interpersonal communication, and multitasking skills;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and meet deadlines; and
  • Strong customer service mentality.
