Licensing Associate

The George Mason University Office of Technology Transfer is currently seeking a Licensing Associate. Responsibilities:

This position reports directly to the Associate Director/Director and will participate in all aspects of protecting and commercializing new technologies developed at the George Mason University. Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluation of new invention disclosures from faculty, and manage ongoing portfolio of intellectual property, including, pre-disclosure, disclosed, provisional applications, non-provisional applications, published patents, and pending licenses;
  • Market university technology portfolio along with negotiating and drafting various agreements including licensing agreements;
  • Focus on marketing intellectual property (IP) to prospective licensees, using a variety of methods and approaches to understand the marketplace; and to identify potential licensees, including use of informational public databases and direct contact with prospective licensees and partners;
  • Responsible for license compliance communications and performing other duties within the scope of the position, as assigned;
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with Mason investigators regarding research innovations, their potential markets and associated confidentiality and IP contractual issues; and
  • Participate with the Associate Director/Director in establishing terms and conditions for option and technology license agreements and assists in networking for potential licensees.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in engineering or computer science, or a closely related field;
  • Some familiarity with market research and technology evaluation;
  • Some experience in technology transfer and negotiation of complex agreements, preferably in an academic setting;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Accomplished communication skills both orally and in writing;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; and comfortable working with multiple constituents, including faculty, industry representatives, and attorneys;
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously with little supervision; and
  • A self-starter with an ability to work effectively independently as well as part of a team is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent Ph.D. in engineering or computer science, or M.B.A. or J.D. in a closely related field is a plus;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain professional relationships is strongly desired;
  • At least one year of specific experience in the following areas: drafting and negotiating license agreements within a University/non-profit institution; ability to perform technical feasibility and competitive landscape analyses; performing market analyses; performing preliminary patentability assessments; and new venture creation; and
  • Working knowledge of intellectual property law, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and/or some business experience is a plus.
