Presidential Fellows Program
Internal Search: Open to current George Mason University tenured faculty only.
The Office of the University President invites current George Mason University tenured faculty applicants only for an internal search for a Presidential Fellow vacancy. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.
To support the mission of George Mason University by assisting the President in developing and implementing select strategic projects.
The Presidential Fellows Program is a half-time opportunity for two semesters (i.e., the academic year), with an opportunity available to be full-time in the summer. For 2017-2018, specific projects and initiatives will be determined based on a combination of the incumbent’s interests and the university’s needs.
The program also provides a leadership development opportunity for faculty interested in exploring a future in university administration. Specific projects or initiatives can be tailored to support this objective.
Similar to an American Council of Education (ACE) Fellowship, the Presidential Fellow will observe and participate in key meetings and events, and take on special projects and assignments while under the mentorship of a senior university leader. This position will work directly with the President in designing and implementing specific projects.
The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a 1:1 teaching load during the course of the one-year assignment.
Among the projects led by previous Presidential Fellows are: 1) directed a number of faculty-related initiatives including the development of a new set of faculty awards in 2016-2017; 2) advised the President and senior team on diversity and inclusion, and helped shape the university’s diversity and inclusion strategy in 2015-2016; 3) provided advice and guidance on enrollment management reform and innovative degree programs with outside partners in 2014-2015; 4) developed entrepreneurial programs and conducted joint initiatives with leading global nongovernmental organizations in 2013-2014; and 5) designed and led the Mason strategic visioning process in 2012-2013.
An understanding of trends and practices in higher education organizations is required. The successful applicant will have some familiarity with higher education administration and the challenges currently facing universities and colleges in the United States.
A track record of leadership within the university is preferred. Experience in dealing with external constituencies (i.e., alumni, donors, business, government and community groups) is further preferred.
