Event Coordinator

The George Mason University, Office of the Provost, Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (SMSC)—located at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) in Front Royal, Va.—seeks a full-time Event Coordinator. This position provides administrative and technical support and customer service in events management. The incumbent will be responsible for handling the logistical elements of the academic and external event programs offered by the SMSC Living-Learning Community in Front Royal, Va. The community consists of three interwoven initiatives: an undergraduate program, graduate courses, and professional training, as well as event and conference programming. These activities are supported by a:

  • 120-bed residence hall;
  • 135-seat dining hall; and
  • Academic building with four classrooms and three labs.

This position requires evening and weekend hours to support various academic and conference related activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated event planning and production experience;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Must have the ability to resolve routine issues and inform management of potential issues;
  • Highly self-motivated, detail-oriented and accuracy-driven;
  • Ability to perform duties with high-level professionalism, flexibility, discretion, judgment, diplomacy and tact;
  • A valid driver’s license, ability to travel independently, and ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends;
  • Experience in providing customer service to internal and external customers;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate a high level of professionalism and customer service;
  • Considerable strong demonstrated computer skills and applications, particularly spreadsheet applications and automated systems;
  • Demonstrated experience in scheduling, prioritizing, and planning multiple assignments while adjusting to changing priorities;
  • Ability to work independently and maintain effective working relationships with people; and
  • Position requires successful completion of a financial background check and a standard and special agency federal background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience; and
  • Experience in higher education environment.
