ESL Specialist – Writing Center

The George Mason University Writing Center invites applications for the position of English as a Second Language (ESL) Specialist. Responsibilities:

This is a 12-month, full-time administrative faculty position in a busy, thriving writing center that serves undergraduate and graduate writers in all degree programs across the university (writingcenter.gmu.edu), which will begin on July 1, 2017. This individual will collaborate with Writing Center staff to support multilingual international and domestic students at Mason through individual consultations, workshops, and writing groups; and to support tutors who work with multilingual writers. Duties include:

  • Tutor advanced multilingual undergraduate and graduate students;
  • Administer the center’s Opt-In Program, which pairs multilingual writers with tutors for regular, weekly appointments;
  • Collaborate in training and mentoring a staff of 30-40 writing tutors to work with multilingual writers, specifically:
    • Develop and lead modules and workshops on working with multilingual writers for graduate tutors’ pre-semester training and for undergraduate tutors’ one-credit course;
    • Develop and deliver a program of ongoing tutor professional development, targeted at working with multilingual writers, to include tutor observations and tutor workshops;
    • Develop instructional resources for tutors and multilingual writers;
    • Mentor tutors who work with multilingual writers;
    • Develop, lead, and assess workshops and writing groups for undergraduate and graduate multilingual students; and
    • Collaborate with colleagues on special projects.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in TESOL, linguistics, foreign language education, or a related field;
  • ESL teaching or writing center tutoring experience at the college level or equivalent; and
  • Evidence of leadership and organizational skills and a collaborative approach to working with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in TESOL, linguistics, foreign language education, rhetoric and composition, or a related field;
  • Demonstrated skill teaching English for academic purposes;
  • Experience developing instruction or resources for L2 writers;
  • Experience developing instruction or resources for instructors or tutors of L2 writers; and
  • Evidence of effective mentoring of student employees.
