Piano Technician

The George Mason University School of Music, within the College of Visual and Performing Arts, invites applications for a full-time Piano Technician. The School of Music is a registered All-Steinway School with Steinway grand pianos in the practice rooms and teaching studios. Responsibilities:

The Piano Technician will tune, voice, regulate, and repair actions for Steinway grand and upright pianos using specialized tools and instruments in accordance with professional standards and procedures; as well as maintain and arrange repair for the harpsichord and electronic keyboards. The incumbent may from time to time present lectures to classes on piano tuning and maintenance. The ideal candidate will be a Registered Piano Technician. This position begins August 1, 2017. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Tune, voice, regulate, and repair Steinway grand and upright pianos in the School of Music for the highest level of musical performance;
  • Tune harpsichord and maintain electronic keyboards;
  • Manage the purchasing of piano supplies, replacement parts, and shop equipment, including hiring outside vendors/consultants (including piano movers);
  • Prioritize and coordinate scheduling of all piano service efficiently and according to current department policy for reserving spaces; and
  • Develop and maintain records/database on repairs, tunings, and service schedules for pianos/harpsichord/electronic pianos; as well as an updated inventory for the same.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrable skill in piano repair techniques including knowledge of Steinway and Sons manufacturing and service procedures;
  • Knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Office suite, Office 365 and Google Docs;
  • Knowledge of institutional settings;
  • Must show considerable skill in verbal and written communication, including ability to maintain harmonious relationships with supervisor(s), subordinates, contractors, vendors, guest artists and the university community;
  • Strong organizational skills, and ability to self-direct work and accomplish tasks in a professional and timely manner;
  • Must possess significant demonstrated experience as a piano technician with a proven record of concert experience; and
  • Several years of experience tuning and regulation of Steinway grand pianos.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered Piano Technician certification (RPT) from the Piano Technician’s Guild is strongly preferred; and
  • A bachelor’s degree in music is desired.
