George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.

Responsibilities:

The EDGE Rock Climbing Instructor will plan, develop and lead The EDGE rock climbing programs run through camps at the Freedom Center. In this role, the instructor will lead lessons on safety, equipment and climbing technique. In addition, the instructor will be responsible for belaying or supervising staff belaying participants. The instructor will set up climbs; work with EDGE facilitators as lead climbing instructor at the Alpine Tower, climbing gym or climbing area at Great Falls National Park; and manage site safety at any of these sites. Working with the EDGE Camp Coordinator and Assistant Director, the incumbent will plan the program, report any needs or incidents, and help coordinate logistics. Campers arrive for off-site climbing typically after 9:00 a.m. and depart at approximately 2:30 p.m. Because the instructor is responsible to set up climbs, keep track of gear, and break-down climbs, the incumbent will need to have availability before campers arrive and after they leave. The instructor will serve as lead instructor supervising at least two belay-trained camp staff.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Availability to instruct on camp dates;
  • Current Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid, more advanced certifications, or the ability to obtain these certifications before first program date; and
  • Current certification in rock climbing instruction or ability to obtain before first program date. Must be a certification accepted by the National Park Service.

Preferred:

  • Two years of experience in rock climbing instruction; and
  • Two or more years of experience working with youth and/or teens.

Instructor Dates:

This position begins in early June for preliminary work and conducts programming for the following dates and camps: weekdays from June 19-23 (Rock Climbing), July 6 (Natural Adventures), July 10-14 (Rock Climbing), July 20 (Freedom Wanderers), July 26 (Girls on Fire), and August 21-25 (Rock Climbing). There may be additional time in late August for debriefing or other follow-up.

This position is subject to a criminal background investigation. Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of this process.
