Assistant Director of Forensics

The George Mason University Department of Communication seeks a dynamic and driven Assistant Director of Forensics. George Mason University Forensics was established in 1971 and remains one of only six schools to have attended all American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournaments. The team has placed in the top five nationally 27 times and is an integral part of the mission and vision of George Mason University. With affiliate programs in China and Korea, the global impact of forensic pedagogy is at the forefront of our program.

Responsibilities:

The successful applicant will be expected to coach, travel, perform administrative duties, and recruit from both the high school and community college forensics circuits. Additional responsibilities include co-directing multiple college forensics tournaments and one of the largest high school speech and debate tournaments in the nation. Participating in department, university and forensics community committees is also expected.

The position requires a 4-3 teaching load that includes Forensics credit hours associated with team meetings and coaching, in addition to traditional course instruction. It is strongly encouraged for the Assistant Director of Forensics to participate as the Assistant Director of the George Mason Institute of Forensics (GMIF) each summer for additional compensation.

Required Qualifications:

  • M.A. in communication;
  • Significant forensics/individual events coaching background at both regional and national levels;
  • Strong event planning background, proficiency in online tabulation programs, outstanding organizational skills, and a willingness/desire to promote the five-decade tradition of the Mason Forensics Program;
  • Strong teaching background (three years minimum in the classroom is desired); and
  • Strong commitment to collegiality and university/forensics community service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in communication; and
  • Strong teaching background (a minimum of three years in the classroom).
