Adjunct Faculty, Humanities

The George Mason University Office of the Provost invites applicants for Adjunct Faculty Humanities instructor positions under the INTO Mason Academic Division to teach in specialized Pathway programs for international students who need additional language and academic preparation before continuing to an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Organized, reliable and committed individuals with pedagogical experience are sought to teach part-time as Adjunct Faculty or Graduate Lecturers. Assignments may include one or more of the following courses that are offered in Spring or Summer 2017:

PROV 105: American Cultures
Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the historical, social and political diversity of American cultures. The course focuses on the development of student ethical self-awareness and intercultural competence though a critical analysis of course materials; and self-reflection of individual beliefs, values and assumptions. Students conduct secondary research to understand the ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious diversity both within the United States and throughout the larger global society.

PROV 106: Introduction to Research Methods for International Students
Course Description: Academic research is the fundamental element of university-level education. Despite the variations in research disciplines, they all share basic concepts of academic inquiry. This course is designed to teach the methods, norms and procedures of undergraduate research in the humanities and social sciences. It should equip international students with the essential skills needed to successfully produce a quality academic paper.

UNIV 140: INTO Mason Pathway Transition
Course Description: Assists first-year international and multilingual standard and accelerated Pathway students with their transition from high school to college life. It helps prepare students for successful progression to their chosen degree plan, the promoting acculturation to academic norms and expectations at Mason, the development of self-efficacy, and engagement with the Mason community. It encourages students to seek out and take full advantage of a wide range of campus resources.

PROV 501: Introduction to Graduate Study for International Students (and related courses, PROV 502 and PROV 504)
Course Description: Designed especially for the graduate Pathway students, this course is the first of a two-part transitional course series designed for international students who are studying abroad, emphasizing development, and readiness and success for graduate/professional school enrollment. This first course covers Western educational systems, university policies and procedures, writing skills and research resources, and graduate school study skills and methods.

All courses are specifically designed for English language learners enrolled at INTO Mason. Instructors will be provided with a tailored curriculum, specific training resources, and reporting requirements associated with the program.

Required Qualification:

  • Master’s or doctorate in a related field(s) and experience teaching in academic settings.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience working with English language learners.

Current qualified George Mason University graduate students are encouraged to apply and will be hired into a Graduate Lecturer position.

The position requires 10 hours per week per three-credit course assigned. Employment begins January 9, 2017 (non-negotiable). The position is for Spring and/or Summer 2017 with opportunity for renewal in future terms.

The position will be supervised by the Course Coordinator(s) associated with the specific courses.

Employment is contingent upon providing the university, prior to the first day of employment, official documentation of degrees earned. International degree holders are responsible for providing a certified third-party translation and evaluation of their academic transcripts.
