Nine-Month Term Instructor or Assistant Professor, English Language

Internal Search: Open to current George Mason University employees only.

INTO Mason Academic Division invites current George Mason University employee applicants only for an internal search for a nine-month, renewable, Term Instructor or Assistant Professor to provide English language instruction for both Academic English and English for Academic Purposes courses. Opening for Spring 2017 with opportunity for renewal.

The department seeks an organized, reliable and committed individual to teach individually and in team-taught courses that complement the intensive English aspects of the Academic English Program, as well as the general education and language-supported aspects of the Pathway Programs offered at Mason.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach the equivalent of 18 contact hours, including a writing-intensive course each Fall and Spring term;
  • Actively participate in service activities including: curriculum development/revision initiatives, meetings and curriculum planning sessions coordinated by the academic leadership, and INTO Mason English language proficiency assessments;
  • Pursue appropriate professional development; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a minimum of a master’s degree in TESOL/TEFL or a related field, as well as successful language teaching experience (a minimum of three years is strongly desired); a terminal degree in a relevant field is required for appointment as Assistant Professor; and a nonterminal master’s degree is required for appointment as Instructor;
  • Must demonstrate a background and interest in English for Academic Purposes (EAP)/content-based instruction (CBI) as well as extensive experience working with international students; and
  • Must be able to teach classes Monday through Friday, especially in the evenings.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates will have experience in language/writing tutoring; teaching first-year composition or advanced-level ESL writing; experience co-teaching or team-teaching; familiarity with the use of appropriate classroom technology; a commitment to continued professional development; an ability to work collaboratively; and an ability and willingness to also teach at the Mason-Korea campus in Songdo, Korea for a semester or year per assignment.

Employment is contingent upon providing the university, prior to the first day of employment, official documentation of degrees earned. International degree holders are responsible for providing a certified third-party translation and evaluation of their academic transcripts.
